DEFORESTATION

Deforestation is the conversion of forested areas to non-forest land for use such as arable land, pasture, urban use, logged area, or wasteland.  Generally, the removal or destruction of significant areas of forest cover has resulted in a degraded environment with reduced biodiversity.  In many countries, massive deforestation is ongoing and is shaping climate and geography.

Deforestation results from removal of trees without sufficient reforestation, and results in declines in habitat and biodiversity, wood for fuel and industrial use, and quality of life.

ENDANGERED SPECIES

An endangered species is a population of an organism which is at risk of becoming extinct because it is either few in number, or threatened by changing environment or predation parameters.  The World Conservation Union (IUCN) has calculated the percentage of endangered species as 40 percent of all organisms based on the sample of species that have been evaluated through 2006.  (Note: the IUCN groups all threatened species for their summary purposes.)  Many nations have laws offering protection to these species: for example, forbidding hunting, restricting land development or creating perserves.  Only a few of the many species at risk of extinction actually make it to lists and obtain legal protection.  Many more species become extinct, or potentially will become extinct, without gaining public notice.

This is my open letter to the humans that live with me on this glorious planet.
Please join in my quest to educate others to the realities of and the consequences of deforestation.

"SAVE THE FORESTS AND IT'S INHABITANTS, SAVE HUMANITY."

"THERE WILL BE NO OTHER INTELLIGENT LIFE COMING TO RESCUE US."

Trees and plants are the lungs of the earth.  They absorb CO2 and release oxygen.  We breath in oxygen and exhale CO2.  What a miraculous relationship.

This is why gardeners love to tend plants.  It is why we go to parks, enjoy hiking and other outdoor excursions.  Are we, subconsciously, wanting to get closer to the green chlorophyl that is the source of our existence?  Do the trees and plants beckon us to come closer to absorb our CO2?  Well, these days trees and plants are trying to keep up with the rising CO2.  We are, unfortunately, not the only things emitting CO2.  So, their message to us at this point may be a prayer to save them.

The great rain-forests around the equator encompasses the largest portion of the lungs of earth.  This region is where weather is determined, it cools our planet and determines the amount of rainfall around the globe.

We are now destroying trees, foliage and animal habitat in the equatorial forest at the rate of the size of Manhattan everyday.  Day in and day out these forests are being clear cut and slashed and burned, and once this happens, are lost FOREVER!

The slashing and burning of the forests around the equatorial region releases more carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere than all the world's cars, trucks and planes combined.

The fertility of the soil in these rain-forest regions is so shallow that there is only two or three years worth of crops harvested, then, the land is fallow.  If artificial fertilizers and pesticides are brought into the region of our great rain-forests, imagine the contamination by mishandling and runoff to the rivers, such as the Amazon.  Then, are we not only endangering the great trees, but also, the animals, birds and the huge diversity of insect and amphibian population.

There is a gold-mine of medicinal plants and wildlife in the rain-forests.  Scientists are, just now, scratching the surface of the great forests to find cures to many of our aliments.  Please, let them search this vast echo system before it is lost.

Saving the tropical trees is not only my quest, it is my heartfelt passion.  I realize that by saving the great forests, I am saving my life, your life and the lives of endangered species and generations to come.

Hypothesis:

There are still apple trees growing in our orchards, therefore, Earth is the Garden of Eden.

Perhaps Adam ate all of the apples on the tree in his garden, therefore, leaving no seeds for regeneration.  And, perhaps, on a cold winter night he chopped down that apple tree to make a warming fire for he and Eve.  The next spring he longed for the deliciously, sweet fruit of that tree and anguished with the realization of what he had done.

Luckily for us, there were other apple trees out of his limited sight.  For, if he had known that there were more trees, he might have continued having warm fires in winter and eating all of the fruit, and not anguished about his deeds until all of the trees were gone forever.

Because of rocket scientists, we have seen EARTH in it's entirety.  This beautiful blue-green, tan and other colors of the spectrum planet that we live on.  This is our Garden of Eden.  Their are no boundaries, only the globe we call EARTH.  Large in our perspective, small in the universe.  WE see our garden as a whole.  And we are beginning to realize that what is taken away in our garden, effects us all.

Have a say in the way our planet grows.  Are we going to continue destroying the trees that give us life, or, are we now going to protect them for future generations?

Find an organization that focuses on saving the rain-forest.  Google or Yahoo, Organization that are saving the rain-forests.  You will find many organizations that contribute to saving our planet.  Educate your children and young adults to our plight.  Recycle as much as you can.  There are many hazardous waste sites that will accept, paints, insecticides, household waste, your  used batteries, old
neon light bulbs, and electronics.

Please join me, let your heart realize it's eminent responsibility.

Sincerely,
